Tax rates and general legal requirements for businesses or companies established by migrants on the long-term business visa are the same as those for New Zealand residents. The tax year for most businesses is 1 April to 31 March.

Business Tax

There are three kinds of tax in New Zealand for businesses.

  • Company tax - Limited liability companies pay a tax rate of 30%.
  • Partnerships - Members of partnerships pay income tax on the salary that they receive from the partnership's profits. This is taxed as personal income tax.
  • Sole traders - Sole traders are taxed on the same rates as personal income tax.

New Zealand Companies Office

New Zealand is an easy place in which to establish a company, and you can do much of it online. Through the New Zealand Companies Office website, you can reserve a company name and incorporate a company. You can also buy a draft constitution, file your annual return and maintain company details online.

The Companies Office website also allows you to search its Companies Register for current and historical information on companies, incorporated societies and charitable trusts. You can search other registers for information on unit trusts, building societies, friendly societies, credit unions and superannuation schemes, among others.
