Wellington City Council would like your views about ways to develop a more successful parks and reserves network in the Newlands, Paparangi, Grenada Village and Woodridge area.

Background

In 2008, the draft Northern Reserves Management Plan recommended that the Council consider future options for some reserves and also look at installing a community playground, similar to the Helston Park play area.

Assessment of Current Parks & Reserves

We've assessed the quality of current parks and reserves in the Newlands, Paparangi, Grenada Village and Woodridge area on:

  • location and accessibility
  • size and layout
  • visual appeal
  • amount of winter sun and summer shade.

While there are some great parks in the area, the assessment also found:

  • some parks are isolated and hidden from view
  • some are on sloping land, which limits use for informal games
  • one park that appears to be empty sections and not public space.

The assessment found the very large reserves, which extend over significant parts around the edges of Newlands:

  • combine with the surrounding harbour to successfully form a 'green belt'
  • have significant visual and ecological value
  • offer recreational opportunities (including walking tracks).

Recommendations

The layout within some parks limits their use. For example, by making a few changes, parks with playgrounds or plantings in the middle of a flat area could also include picnic areas, community gardens or orchards, or kick-about space.

Brochure & Maps

The brochure and maps below provide more details and recommendations:

Map 3 identifies parks and reserves that:

  • contribute to the network, or have the potential to contribute more if changes or further investment are made
  • have limited potential for improvement.

  • at the Council Service Centre at 101 Wakefield Street
  • from the Newlands Community Centre, 9 Batchelor Street, Newlands
