Predictions of a shortage of skilled personnel
in five years has led Wellington City Council,
in collaboration with the Wellington Institute
of Technology, to establish a Diploma in
Building Surveying.
Building inspectors ensure buildings are safe,
healthy and environmentally sustainable,
and designed and constructed in line with
regulations.
Course coordinator Michael Brannigan says
"The diploma aims to address
the changing nature of the
building industry and
challenges highlighted by
leaky building syndrome."
Private sector individuals and council officers
around the country are pursuing the
Wellington-based qualification, via a mix
of distance learning, online learning and
class contact.
"The qualification is similar to that required
in Britain and Australia. In future, building
inspectors are likely to work in a consulting
role because the complexity of buildings has
increased. The result of this will be a
standardised level of competence."
