| Charles Chinnaiyah, Sysware |
|
In 1985 Charles Chinnaiyah, a Sri Lankan turned proud Wellingtonian,
set up his own successful IT company in Wellington. He created the company,
called Sysware, to fill a gap in the business intelligence market. The
company converts data into meaningful information to assist with the many
issues facing businesses.
Charles left his senior IT role in Sri Lanka to emigrate to New Zealand
with his wife and son in 1981. “It was a choice between New Zealand
and Australia, but we never got that far. We landed in Auckland but thought
we’d have a look at Wellington and stayed. I don’t regret either
decision.
“There was something about the picturesque landscape, and you could
walk from one end of town to the other.”
After working for a few years at the New Zealand Dairy Board, Charles
established Sysware.
“Ours is a very niche market. It’s not really about IT tools
to solve business issues, it’s about understanding the business and
following the right process to convert data into information. Once we develop
a solution, we train the clients to use it. We don’t hold the client
to ransom for ongoing servicing of the system for revenue. We’ve
built a good reputation from doing that.”
The approach has clearly worked. The small family company has grown to
35 staff, four shareholders and millions in revenue - with offices in Wellington,
Sydney and Melbourne. It has several significant government, financial
and corporate clients in both countries, including ANZ, AMP, Telecom, Telstra,
Unilever, and BNZ. Sights are firmly set on becoming the vendor-independent
leading business intelligence company in Australasia. Future growth is
forecast at 20 percent a year.
