Ellipsoidal rubbish bins

New oval rubbish bins – recently installed in the central business district – are another example of innovation. The bins are fabricated from aluminium and recycled plastic and are an astonishing 25% cheaper than the traditional bins.

Wellington City Council Urban Designer Hugh Nicholson commissioned Matthijs Siljee and Hanne van Beek of Wellington-based H&M Studio to help work up the new bin design.

Hugh says 'Apart from the fact that some of the old bins just looked awful, we were faced with hassles in finding replacement parts, rising manufacturers’ costs, and ergonomic problems – emptying traditional bins is hard on the backs and arms of our street cleaners.'

'So we’ve come up with a side-opening bin – the cleaners don’t have to lift the rubbish container up and out – it’s now a far easier job. We showed the design to ACC and they were delighted.'

Hugh says the bins are slim and streamlined. 'Not only do they fulfil all the functional needs, they actually don’t look like grotty old rubbish bins. They are pieces of street furniture that contribute to the look and enjoyment of our revitalised central business district.'
