Civil Defence Centres

In an emergency listen to your local radio station to hear which Civil Defence Centres are working.

What are Civil Defence Centres?

Civil Defence Centres are known gathering points for the community after a major disaster or emergency. They are activated and operated entirely by the public and act as a hub for the coordination of community emergency response.

Volunteers at the centres collect information about the impact of an emergency and inform the Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO).

Resources at Civil Defence Centres

Each Civil Defence Centre has a basic start-up kit consisting of:

  • an AM/FM radio
  • maps
  • a Civil Defence radio that allows communication with the Council's Emergency Operations Centre.

Civil Defence Centres do not carry food, water, equipment or other resources to be handed out to the general public - that is not their purpose. Follow the advice in the Prepare for an Emergency section to make sure you are sufficiently prepared.

When to go to a Civil Defence Centre

Once you have checked on your household and neighbours, you may want to go to a Civil Defence Centre that has been activated:

  • if you need help
  • if you can offer help by sharing your resources and skills
  • to gather and share information on what has happened in your neighbourhood.
